Yes - I’m ‘enjoying’ sitting in my cold workshop and looking into the cold and wet landscape outside - brrrrr - another english winter!
We did a building project a couple of years ago - renovating two old barns - now finished but took more time and money than planned - and meant that for the first time in over 35 years I did not go to a kite festival that year - oops!
I built and flew the bomb kite for the Discovery Channel back in 2008 - I seem to remember the weather was very like today - but we did set fire to the beach in pouring rain with the ‘greek fire’!
The kite was basically a big serpent kite with extra wings. I’ve hopefully attached a photo of the front but I’ve drawn in the frame thats on the back.
The spine - 1.80m x 8mm carbon, the cross spars -1.51m/1.76m/1.68m x 6mm carbon, the outside hoop - 4.9m x 6mm fibreglass, in 7 pieces to thread around perimeter pocket with gaps for cross spreader connectors - a fiddle to do. It was then bowed about 200mm. The winglets - 0.80m and spreader were 4mm carbon rod. The bridle had 3 legs, but should have had 4 with 1 more to the top of the head - for better flight. It was a total of 18m long I think, the tail was a straight taper to the tip.
I hope that answers some of the questions - I still have the kite and do fly it occasionally., but threading the connectors onto the perimeter frame as you go can be a slow process - I am used to soft kites with no assembly at all!
